How to read a German Pflege employment contract without missing the quiet clauses

A Pflege employment contract can look short while hiding decisions about probation, night differentials, and notice. Read it once for structure, then again with a highlighter on money and exit terms.
Probation (Probezeit)
Six months is common. During probation, notice periods are often shorter for both sides. If you need housing deposits timed to a stable start, ask HR whether the probation notice can be clarified in writing.
Shift differentials
Night, weekend, and holiday allowances may appear in a Tarifvertrag reference rather than as a single salary line. Ask which tariff applies and whether your grade matches your recognition status.
Questions worth asking before signature
- When does orientation week count toward working time?
- Are language course hours deducted from salary or supported separately?
- What happens if recognition is still conditional on day one?
